Introduction about me and things I like

Hello,

My name is Nicholas Thomson. I am a mathematics major at the university. I have always loved math so that is why I chose it as my major. What caused me to like math was I have always exceled in the subject. Apart from doing school all the time I do have hobbies of my own that I make time for. I am an avid gamer. Unlike most people who tend to stay to one type of game I like to play many different types of games. I like to play first person shooter games such as Call of Duty or Battle Field, but I will also play games such as Final Fantasy which I don’t see first person shooter players play very often. I also have the hobby of coin collecting. I like to collect older coin especially old pennies. My favorite coin is an 1832 large cent pennies that I found at my grandmothers. One of my favorite things to do when not gaming is to watch movies. Some of my favorite movie are all the dc and marvel movies, James Bond movies and Alien and Predator movies. There are many more movies I love but too many to names to name. I also love to spend time with my family and friends. When I spend time with them we tend to do my hobbies at the same time. My favorite food is a dish called shrimp scampi and the grossed food in the world to me would be olives. I’m not afraid to try knew weird foods either. To prove this, I have eaten crickets and jellyfish before and they were both still better than olives. There are some places in the world I would like to visit. I would love to go to Japan, Europe in general, and Antarctica. I hope that once I am out of college to find a good stable job that would allow me to able to afford to visit these places. Along with the stable job I hope to have a family that I love and support. This is just so simple information about me and I hope that one of you is like me.

  1. Hey Nick!

I want to travel over to Japan as well. It’s a goal of mine to hopefully achieve by December, so fingers crossed that dream actually comes true. If there’s anything specific you think is cool to check out in Japan if you were to go then please let me know because I’d love suggestions on things! I was the same type of gamer when I had more time to game. I used to be sucked in to playing on my xbox before I took up working all the time and commiting to heavy semesters with lots of credit hours. My favorites back then were first person shooters, RPGS, and arcade style combat games. It’s nice to have an all around love for gaming because then there’s always something out for you when new things get announced! Are you excited for anything coming out that was announced at E3 this year? Nice to meet you!

  2. I started out as a math major in college too, Nick! They recommended that math majors do Russian as their foreign language... so I enrolled in a Russian class, and I discovered that for me foreign languages were even more fascinating than math, so I switched majors. But I still like math and learning new things about the world of math. And maybe you could do a project for this class inspired by coins! There are so many coins that commemorate gods and goddesses and/or mythological stories. If you look for coins of the ancient Greek and Roman gods and goddesses, you will find lots of images online; for example, here is Athena with her owl... so cool!

  3. Hi Nick, I am a chemical biosciences major but I also appreciate that most everything I am able to learn about science is rooted/proven through mathematics. It is definitely a valuable skill to have! I am not an avid coin collector, but I also like to collect old coins. Mostly through ones my grandparents give to me. I always find it fascinating to find an old coin and to think about all the places and people it has seen.

  4. Hello Nick! I am a Chemical Engineer here at The University of Oklahoma and I can relate to your love for math! Math is part of the reason for me choosing engineering, it just makes so much sense to me and is almost soothing when you finish a problem. Also I love to play Call of Duty too! I use to play it all the time especially when Modern Warfare 2 was out!

  5. Hi Nick! I admire you for being a math major, I am not gifted at math by any means so I always appreciate when someone is. That is cool that you collect coins! I have a collection of silver dollar coins that my parents would give to me "from the tooth fairy." Last year I lived in Italy for most of the summer and it was beautiful. There is always something new to see and do, so I would definitely recommend going in the future if you can. Hope your semester goes well!

  6. Hey Nick! Math is honestly my arch-nemesis so when someone else can do it, it's really impressive to me. I love the Marvel franchise! I didn't read the comics, mostly because for a long time I was unaware that comic books were still a real thing...but I do really like the movies. I still haven't seen Infinity War though. I hope it comes out of Netflix soon.
    Olives are disgusting.

  7. Hi Nick! That’s so impressive that you’re a math major. I always hated math, because it never came easy to me. However, since being at OU I discovered that calculus isn’t as bad as I thought it would be. I also love the Marvel movies, specifically the Avenger movies. As far as the DC movies go, Wonder Woman is probably my favorite movie ever but I wasn’t a big fan of Batman vs. Superman or Justice League.

  8. Hey Nicholas! I admire you for being a math major. Math is a subject that I have always struggled with. I'm pretty sure I had a tutor every single year all throughout middle and high school. Thankfully I completed all the math requirements for my major last year! That's interesting that you've tried crickets and jelly fish... were they any good?

  9. Hi Nick!
I once had a love for math, but I have since found that math is a subject that you have to continue studying and doing all the time to keep up with. I took a couple semester, maybe years, off from math and have since found that I do not enjoy it as much. I also do not like olives, by themselves or whole. if they are chopped up in something I am fine with them though. I like watching my little cousins, and nephews face light up when we stick them on their fingers. the first time they are laughing walking around with them on all of their fingers eating them, makes for a little fun during holiday dinners. I also enjoy watching all of the dc and marvel movies, brother is a big batman fan, even though I have fallen behind in the most recent marvel movies (dang school work).

  10. Hi Nicholas! Props to you for majoring in math! Math is definitely a tricky subject. Coin collecting is a cool hobby! I know my family has always collected the special quarters, but a penny from 1832 is really neat! Finding coins that are old is a different but cool feeling. I’ve never found one as old as your penny, but it is always special when you see something from so long ago.I can relate with you about the olives. They aren’t my favorite either, but I think that I would rather eat olives than jellyfish! Thank you for sharing!

  11. Hi Nick!
I have to say, I 100% agree with you about olives. They look and taste like I imagine an alien eyeball would taste like, just salt and bitterness.
I also love movies! You listed a lot of action movies- that's my favorite genre too! My favorite movies are Mad Max: Fury Road and Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, but I also love Marvel movies.

  12. Hey Nick!

I really identify with the fact that you chose math as your major because you're good at it and you enjoy it. I feel like a lot of the time we are expected to say that we chose our major for some profound reason, but when it boils down to it, I think most of us have a much more practical reason for choosing it. So kudos to you for just putting it out there!

  13. Hey Nick! I do not know how you are a math major, I think I would be horrible at that. Don't get me wrong, I am not bad at math I just don't like it. It seems like most guys these days are avid gamers so I wasn't surprised to read that! I was surprised that you don't like olives though, I love them! I hope you have a good semester and have fun gaming!

  14. Hi Nicholas! You have my respect being a math major! I used to be good at it in high school, but I've been out a lot of years & it comes really hard for me now. I love math as it applies to accounting (my chosen field) but other than that, not so much. I'm putting off my Business Calc class until the last possible moment just because I'm dreading it. I also love DC and Marvel movies. Shrimp scampi is probably one of my favorite foods of all time! That's cool that you are a gamer. It seems so popular and while we own a system and several games, we just never seem to have time to mess with it much. Waiting for the new Red Dead Redemption to come out next week though! Have a great semester!

  15. Hi Nick! After get to know you through your introduction, it seems like you like every action movies and games pretty much. If you do not afraid to try new and weird food, you can go to Thailand to try the fry scorpion or try Vietnamese fetal duck eggs. I can tell that the duck egg is very good. It's kind of disgusting for those people first time try it. And i haven't try the dry scorpion yet and i don't have any plan to try too ^/^.
    Have fun semester!

  16. Hi Nick!
Being a math major sounds pretty difficult! I don't absolutely hate math but it definitely takes me a while to get a concept figured out.
I do not personally collect coins but I think it sounds very interesting! I actually save more rare ones that I find now for my kids in the future.
Good luck on the rest of your semester!

  17. Hi Nicholas!
For starters, I can't believe you have ate crickets! What was the occasion? That's awesome you collect coins, I actually have one of those US. quarter maps that I have almost completely filled except for three states I believe! I also aspire to travel the world and see new places and interact with different cultures. We will get there one day! lol Nice meeting you!

  18. Hi, Nicholas! First off, I cannot believe that you have eaten crickets! I would never, ever, ever eat a bug, so I'm not sure how you were able to do that. I remember when I was a kid I went through a phase of wanting to collect a quarter from every state and put them in a book especially for quarter collecting, but I don't think I ever filled the book entirely. I would definitely love to travel the world when I have the time and money! Have a great rest of your semester!

  19. Hi Nick, already I applaud you for being a math major. I am alright at math but it all starts to blur together after Calculus 2. I think it's interesting that you collect coins! As a kid, I tried to do that with just quarters but I think my parents just ended up taking the money away from me, haha. Have a good rest of your semester!

  20. Hey Nick! I love the fact that it seems like you know yourself very well. I am so jealous that you collect coins, as it was a hobby that I had tried to start my whole childhood! I actually had started a coin collection in elementary school and then my mom unknowingly took them with the rest of the change from my piggy bank to turn them into cash, so that was the end of that.

  21. Hey Nick. I like how your major is mathematics because not a lot of people I know are doing that. I can only imagine how hard it would be to take all those math classes. Also I think it's really cool how you ate a jellyfish and would rather have that the an olive. I hope you do find a job that lets you do all the things you'd like to do.

  22. Hey Nick!

I wish I was sure that I wanted to pursue something as much as you like math! I am very interested in reading your stories from that perspective because I imagine them to have more patterns and analytical thought behind them than most. Your coin collection is actually very impressive to me! I have tried to collect currency from every country I have visited and it always amazes me how similar each country is when I examine it. Anyway, I look forward to reading your stories!

  23. Hi Nick!

I work at a restaurant (Charleston's), and one of my absolute favorite items we serve is in fact the Shrimp Scampi. I've never really played fast online based combat stuff like COD, but I love video games and I'm working through Red Dead Redemption 2 right now, at least as much as school allows.

I loved my coin collection as a kid, and now I'm wondering what on earth happened to it over the years. I still inspect all of my coin change for double dies and drummer boy quarters, ha.

    Nice to meet you!

  24. Whats up Nick?!

I admire you for your love of math! I could not do it. My mother is like you and enjoys math. I unfortunately missed that gene. That is cool that you play video games. I actually just learned how to play zombies in Call of Duty. My ex played it all the time and now I have an addiction lol.

  25. Hello Nick! Wow, a mathematics major. I don't know if I could handle four years of math lol. But I do find certain areas of math very interesting. Specifically, stuff that applies more to physics like higher-dimensional Cartesian spaces, infinite series, etc. I'm a very imaginative person, so when I play games, I tend to go for the fantasy genre. I'm not really into Call of Duty. With that said, I also love marvel and dc movies. I'm glad to find another person who's not afraid to admit that lol

  26. Hi Nick! I like your picture! I think math is a great major and it can be applied to almost everywhere. I wish I exceled at math too. I like Call of Duty too. I think it’s one of the most addictive games out there in the video game market. 1832?! Wow that’s a really old, precious coin! I love marvel movies too. Thank you for a great introduction and it’s nice to meet you Nick!
